Qubole, a big data-as-a-service company, is open sourcing its Quark platform, a cost-based SQL optimizer. The Quark project is now available in SaaS implementation via the Qubole Data Service (QDS).
Usually, the datasets are generated by data teams which are aggregated and coped to a variety of analytics system in order to balance performance and cost; however, this makes it difficult for analysts to query data for quick business decisions.
According to Ashish Thusoo, co-founder and CEO, by open sourcing of Quark, Qubole is simply offering a solution which allows the developers to route SQL queries across data warehouses, big data SQL engines, and data marts.
Quark models relationships among datasets using database concepts such as materialized views and OLAP cubes, allowing data analysts to take advantage of the fastest and most efficient dataset for their queries.
According to Thusoo, the future updates to the platform will go on to include extensions to the cloud along with the ability to stream analytics.
Thusoo also inform uss that with Quark, they are hoping that this particular project can significantly help in simplification of the user experience, especially around the analysts.
