DB2 term is related to the Relational Database Management System called RDBMS which is originally introduced by IBM in 1983 and used for to run on its MVS (Multiple Virtual Storage) mainframe platform. DB2 Name is invented from the hierarchical database model to the new relational model. Although DB2 was initially designed to work exclusively on IBM mainframe platforms, it was later ported to other widely used operating systems like UNIX, Windows and presently in Linux. We also know that DB2 is the family RDBMS products which serve a number of different operating system platforms. DB2 databases can be accessed from any application program by using Microsoft"s Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) interface, the Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) interface, or a CORBA interface broker.
