Oracle has recently introduced the
StorageTek Virtual Storage Manager (VSM) 7 System, which offers mainframe and heterogeneous storage united with added capacity for automated tiering to the public cloud.
“Oracle announces the all new StorageTek Virtual Storage Manager (VSM) 7 System, the most secure and scalable data protection solution for mainframe and heterogeneous systems with the additional capability to provide fully automated tiering directly to the public cloud. Furthermore, Oracle’s StorageTek VSM 7 System has been architected to seamlessly integrate with Oracle Storage Cloud Service—Object Storage and Oracle Storage Cloud Service – Archive Service and provides storage administrators with a built-in cloud strategy. With Oracle, cloud storage is now as accessible as on-premise storage.”
The StorageTek VSM 7 System provides data protection for IBM z system mainframe with data interchange across previous generation VSM systems, along with data deduplication and native cloud tiering, to provide mainframe and heterogeneous storage users with the capability to acces additional capacity on demand. The SPARC M7 processor is powered by Oracle, which allows Oracle’s StorageTek VSM 7 System to deliver wide-key encryption for data which is at rest and on removable tape media. It also uses Silicon Secured Memory for data protection.
StorageTek VSM 7 System, which supports high availability, provides data protection solutions from on-premises to Oracle Public Cloud, offering a single point of contact spanning the requirement of mainframe storage and heterogeneous storage. With the help of native cloud tiering, users can now achieve visibility and also diagnostics from on-premise Storage Tek VSM 7 System deployments to the Oracle Storage Cloud Service or Oracle Storage Cloud Archive Service.
According to Steve Zivanic, vice president, Storage Business Group, Oracle, the new system enables end-to-end visibility.
James Cates, senior vice president, Archive Product Development, Oracle, states,
"In the past, data protection solutions were designed to deal with exponential data growth on-premises, but an entirely different dynamic drove the design of the VSM 7. The core is still there—elevated performance, twice the capacity, a higher degree of scalability, but we saw a gap in the market, so we developed Engineered Cloud Tiering to enable mainframe users to take advantage of cloud economics.”
The new system will be available this quarter, for more information
